Karan Johar who is popular known as KJo in the Bollywood film industry is a famous Indian director, producer, screenwriter, fashion designer, TV presenter and actor. He is best known for hosting his own talk show, Koffee with Karan where he roasts the celebrities about their personal and professional lives over a cup of coffee.

Johar’s directional debut started off with the famous 1998 romantic comedy movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hain for which he even won a Filmfare Award for the best director and best screenplay. He is mainly popular for making films that are more of a family drama and even highlights sensitive topics through his films.

Early life and education

Karan Johar was born as Karan Dharma Kama Johar on May 25, 1972 in Mumbai, Maharashtra to the famous producer Yash Johar and Hiroo Johar. He has been a “mama’s boy” since his childhood and is one still to this day.

Johar pursued his education from the Greenlaws High School and later graduated with his bachelor degree from the H.R College of Commerce and Economics. He later earned his Master’s degree in French.

Career

Karan Johar started his career with acting where he portrayed the character of Shrikant in the serial Indradhanush which used to air on Doordarshan. Karan is a firm believer of numerology and thus used to name his films with “K” which he stopped after watching the movie Lage Raho Munnabhai which contradicted all his beliefs.

Johar started his career as an assistant director with Aditya Chopra’s movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in the year 1995 which still to this day remains as one of the most popular Bollywood movies. He made his debut as a director with the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hain starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee. The movie went onto become one of the blockbuster hits following its release.

Johar’s 2001 family drama movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham… starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithilk Roshan and Kareena Kapoor was one of the block buster hits which elevated the fame of Karan up by a notch. Other films including My Name is Khan, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Student of the Year are just the few names to start the list of super hit movies.  The movie ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ directed by him and released in 2016 was embroiled in controversies concerning Pakistani actors, but ended up being one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. The movie  was also his first directed film to earn Rs. 100 crore at the box office.

Following his father’s death back in 2004, Karan took over the production house, Dharma Productions and has produced a number of films. Some of the most popular ones being Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dostana, Agneepath, and Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani et cetera.

Apart from the big screen, Johar has also been a very prominent figure in the television, be it hosting his own talk show or being as a judge is many talent shows. Some of the most popular talent shows that he has been part of include Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, India’s Got Talent et cetera. Karan has also been a costume designer for a number of movies that he has been part of including Dil To Pagal Hain, Mohabbatein, Main Ho Naa, Om Shanti Om et cetera.

Karan Johar has an estimated net worth of around $200 million. He makes money as a producer, director and also as a celebrity judge and talk show host. An entrepreneur and model, he has invested in Dubsmash as well. He also curates content for Colors Infinity Channel and earns money endorsing some top-line brands like Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Dunhill jackets.

House

The celebrated director stays in sea-facing duplex home at Carter Road (Mumbai), one of the richest pieces of real estate in the world.  The 8000 square feet property titled ‘The Residency’  cost him Rs. 32 crore, when he bought it in 2010. The home where he would stay with his parents, is in Malabar Hill, valued at Rs. 20 crore. Karan Johar has an office in Khar, valued at Rs. 10 crore.
