Arnab Goswami is one of the most popular journalists in India. He is currently serving as the editor –in –chief and news anchor for the channel “Times Now” and ET Now. He is best known for his shows like ‘The Newshour’ and ‘Frankly Speaking with Arnab’.
Early life and background
Arnab Goswami was born on 9th October 1973 in Guwahati, Assam. He belongs to a very eminent family of Assam. His paternal grandfather, Rajani Kanta Goswami, was a lawyer and a freedom fighter. While his maternal grandfather, Gauri Sankar Bhattacharya, was a communist and held the position of leader of opposition in Assam for many years. Also, his father, Colonel (Retd.) Manoranjan has been a member of BJP and contested the Lok Sabha election in 1998. His mother, Suprabha is a home maker.
Being the son of an army officer, Arnab studied in various schools across the country. He completed his 10th board from “Delhi Cantonment at Mount St. Mary’s School” and appeared his 12th board from “Jabalpur Cantonment in Kendriya Vidyalaya”. After completing his school education, he enrolled in the Hindu College, Delhi University and earned the bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Arnab completed his master degree in Social Anthropology from Oxford University in the year 1994. Thereafter, in the year 2000, Arnab became a visiting D C Pavate Fellow in the International Studies Department in Sydney Sussex College, Cambridge University.
Career Achievements
In the year 1995, Arnab Goswami started his career with “The Telegraph” in Calcutta. He served the newspaper approximately for a year. Later he shifted his focus to television journalism and joined the network “NDTV 24*7”. Initially, he used to host daily newscasts and did reporting for “New Tonight”. In subsequent years, he acquired the position of news editor and became a part of the core team. Arnab started hosting the program “Newshour” every weekend. It was the longest news analysis show broadcasted on any channel. Thereafter, he became the senior editor of NDTV 24*7 and was responsible for managing the entire content for the channel. Owing to his journalism skills displayed in the show “Newsnight”, Arnab was bestowed with the “Best News Anchor of Asia 2004” award.
Currently, Arnab Goswami is associated with the news channel “Times Now” and holds the position of editor- in- chief. He also hosts the show “The Newshour” which is broadcasted at 9 PM and includes live news coverage. This show has featured many eminent personalities which includes Parvez Musharraf, Rahul Bajaj etc. He received media attention and appreciation due his journalism skills displayed during the “26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack”,” the Trust Vote in October 2008” and so on.
Apart from this, Arnab also hosts a show called “Frankly Speaking with Arnab” where he got the opportunity to take interviews of many eminent personalities across the globe which includes Dalai Lama, Benazir Bhutto, Hamid Karzai, Hillary Clinton and many more.
In addition to this, he has also authored a book namely “Combating Terrorism: The Legal Challenge”. In his glorious career, Arnab received various awards and accolades such as “Society Young Achievers Award for excellence in the field of Media” (2007), “Assamese of the Year Award by News Live” (2010), Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism (TV) by the Indian Express Group (2010) etc.
On June 27, 2012, Arnab Goswami created history by interviewing Narendra Modi on Times Now; it was the first time Narendra Modi gave interview to a private news channel after his appointment in 2014.
Often due his remarks in the show “The Newshour”, Arnab has faced many criticisms. The Outlook has published a cover story called “’The Man Who Killed TV News” criticizing Arnab’s way of journalism. He has also been criticized by media and some students of JNU for calling Umar Khalid anti national in his show “The Newshour”.
Resignation from Times Now (The reason)
On November 1, 2016, as a part of a one hour farewell video conference, Goswami announced that he was quitting the post of Editor-in-Chief for Times Now. He made it clear that the ‘game has just begun’. There are speculations that he will be floating a TV channel of his own with Rupert Murdoch and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. There are also rumors that he may join Fox News.
