Michael Richard Pompeo is an American politician and businessman. President Trump announced on March 13, 2018, that Pompeo would take over as the United States Secretary of State after current SOS retires on March 31, 2018.
Pompeo was formerly a Republican US congressman and was elected to the seat consecutively from 2011 to 2017. He was appointed as Central Intelligence Agency director by President Trump on Jan 23, 2017. Mike has also been a member of the Republican National Committee from the state of Kansas. He was also affiliated to the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party. Pompeo is considered as a Trump Loyalist and has been a member of the Italian American Congressional Delegation.
Early Life and Education
Mike Pompeo was born in Orange, CA, on 30th December 1963 to an Italian father Wayne Pompeo and mother Dorothy.
Mike went to the Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley, California. He played as power forward for the basketball team of the school. He later attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1986, majoring in mechanical engineering.
After working for a few years, Pompeo attended the Harvard Law School and achieved a Juris Doctor/JD in 1994. He was a part of the editors’ board for the Harvard Law Review while at the university.
Career
In 1986, Mike joined the United States Army as an Officer in the Armor Branch Cavalry. During his tenure in the army, Pompeo graduated through the ranks and eventually became a Captain. He was a patrolling officer in Berlin before the Berlin Wall fell. He also served in the first Gulf War. In1991, he finished his US Army service.
After getting his doctorate, Pompeo joined the law firm Williams & Connolly. He moved to Wichita, Kansas, in 1998 and launched his own company with college friends as partners. The partners had purchased a few companies and then integrated them into one company called Thayer Aerospace. In 2006, Mike sold off his share to Highland Capital Management. After he was appointed as CIA director, his partner at the firm became the COO.
Mike contested for the 4th District Congressional seat in Kansas in 2010 and won it by a handsome margin. He would retain the seat in the subsequent elections of 2012, 2014, and 2016. Mike served on several committees when in the US Congress.
President Trump announced on Nov 18, 2016, that he would nominate Mike to the position of the Director of the CIA. He was confirmed as CIA director by the United States Senate on Jan 23, 2017. Pompeo took over as the United States SOS after the retirement of current US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in 2018.
