Ruth “Dusty” Anderson is a popular former American actress and model. Anderson began her career as a photographer and soon transitioned to a modelling career. She was introduced as a model by Fashion designer Harry S Conover who gave her the stage name of Dusty Anderson. Although Anderson mostly focused on a career in modelling, she also appeared in supporting roles in several films in the decade from 1940s- 1950.
Anderson featured in the New York Magazine which contributed to her popularity and won her film offers. She was a popular American pin-up girl during World War II and featured in the YANK magazine of the United States Military. Some of her best known acting roles include the films ‘Cover Girl’, ‘Tonight and Every Night’ ‘Crime Doctor’s Warning’ and ‘The Phantom Thief’.
Early Life and Education
Anderson was born as Ruth Anderson on 17 December 1918 in the city of Toledo in Ohio, United States of America. She was raised in the city of her birth by her parents and spent a lot of time at her grandmother’s home in Toledo while growing up.
Anderson completed her elementary, secondary and high school education from Toledo and aspired to build a career as a photographer. She worked extensively to buy two professional cameras but lost them when her canoe on a trip to Lake Erie overturned. Anderson once again strove to put money together to purchase another camera and started working as a model, until she was able to build a career in acting.

Anderson began her career in modelling and became the cover-girl of the New York Magazine. She made her feature film debut in 1944 appearing in a minor role in the Columbia Pictures musical film ‘Cover Girl’ which featured Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly in lead roles. Anderson continued to appear in several other films but mostly was featured in secondary roles. In a span of three years, Anderson appeared in eight films all of which saw her playing minor characters. She essayed the character of Toni in the 1945 film ‘Tonight and Every Night’ which once again saw Rita Hayworth in the lead role.
During the era of the Second World War Anderson gained major popularity as a pin-up girl and became a favourite among the United States Military Troops. She featured in the United States Military’s magazine, YANK in the October 1944 issue. Anderson then appeared in 1945 mystery film ‘Crime Doctor’s Warning in which she essayed the character of Connie Mace. The film was the fourth of the 10 Crime Doctor films franchise. She was also seen as Sandra in the 1946 American crime film ‘The Phantom Thief’ directed by D. Ross Lederman which was part of the film series on the Boston Blackie Crimes. Anderson’s final screen appearance was in an uncredited role in a film directed by her husband in 1950.

Anderson has been married twice. Anderson was first married to former United States Marine Corps Captain Charles Mathieu from 1941-1945. The union did not produce any children
Anderson then got married to Romanian-born director Jean Negulesco in July 1946 at producer Howard Hawks home in West Los Angeles, California. Anderson suffered a miscarriage in December 1947 and was unable to conceive again. Anderson and Negulesco adopted two daughters named Gaby and Tina. She retired from acting to raise her children and the family eventually moved from Beverly Hills to the Spanish island of Majorca.
