Katherine Anne “Katie” Couric is a renowned American news journalist and author who has had a distinguished career with United States’ Big Three television networks i.e. CBS, ABC and NBC. Couric was also employed by CNN for a brief period and most recently, served in the capacity of a Global News Anchor for Yahoo!. Couric started her career in the capacity of an assignment editor at CNN. She also served as the host of ‘Katie’, a daytime talk show that was produced by the Disney–ABC Domestic TV.
From 1989-2006, Couric served as a host on the NBC News network where she gained prominence for hosting ‘Today’. She joined CBS News in 2006 where she served until 2011 where she anchored CBS Evening News and served as a correspondent for ’60 Minutes’. From 2011-2014, Couric was employed by ABC News as a special correspondent and named the host of ‘Katie’. Early Life and Education
Couric was born on 7 January 1957 in Arlinton, Virginia as the daughter of part-time writer and homemaker Elinor Tullie (née Hene) and public relations executive turned news editor John Martin Couric who served at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and later Washington, D.C.’s United Press. Couric has a Jewish mother but was raised to be a Presbyterian. Couric has three siblings; a brother named John Jr., and a sisters Clara Batchelor and Emily Couric (who she lost to Pancreatic Cancer in 2001). She is of French, German, English and Scottish ancestry.
Couric was a student of Jamestown Elementary school and Williamsburg Middle School in Arlington and later attended Yorktown High School in the same city, where she was a cheerleader. She served as an intern with WAVA news radio station, Washington D.C. She later attended the University of Virginia from where she earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies and graduated in 1979.
Career Rise
Couric started her career at ABC News Bureau in 1979 and soon moved to CNN where she served as an assignment editor. She also served at Miami’s WTVJ and NBC’s WRC-TV as a reporter. Couric joined NBC News in 1989 as a Deputy Pentagon Correspondent and served as co-host and anchor, filling in as a substitute on the shows ‘NBC News at Sunrise, ‘Sunday Today’ and ‘Today’. She was named ‘Today’s permanent co-anchor in 1991 and continued as the host for 15 years at NBC and served as the co-host of several NBC specials including the opening ceremonies of ‘Olympics Games’. Couric joined CBS in 2006 and was named the anchor and managing editor of the show ‘CBS Evening News’ where she hosted several prominent personalities like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Condoleeza Rice etc. She covered big stories like the Haiti Earthquake, the Egyptian Revolution, the BP oil spill etc and served as a correspondent on ‘60 Minutes’ from 2006-2011.
Couric joined ABC News as a special correspondent in 2011 where she served as a co-anchor on special coverage stories such as the 9/11 attacks anniversary. She even served as a guest co-host of ‘Live! with Regis and Kelly’ and ‘The View’. She also anchored ‘Katie’s Take’ and ‘Katie’ on ABC News and its Disney arm respectively. She was hired by Yahoo! CEO Marrissa Mayer in 2013 where she served as Yahoo News’ global anchor.
Husband and Children
Couric was married to attorney John Paul “Jay” Monahan from 1989 until his death in 1998. Couric has two daughters with Monahan named Elinor Tully “Ellie” Monahan born in 1991 and Caroline “Carrie” Couric Monahan born in 1996. Couric lost her husband to Colon cancer and went on to become a spokesperson for the disease.
Couric dated financier John Molner for two years and became engaged to him in September 2013. The couple tied the knot in June 2014 in a private ceremony at her Hamptons home.
