Kangana Ranaut has made quite a name for herself in Bollywood. She is best known for movies like Queen, Tanu Weds Manu and Gangster.  The 1.73 meter tall actress is one of the highest paid actresses in Bollywood, and is known for her wide variety of roles.

Early life and Education

Kangana Ranaut was born to Asha, a school teacher and Amardeep, a businessman on 23rd March, 1986. She had a simple upbringing at Bhambla, now Surajpur in Himachal Praesh, India. She has an elder sister, Rangoli and a younger brother, Akshat. Ranaut lived in a joint family set-up and was rebellious and stubborn as a child. Kangana Ranaut was studious and completed her education from DAV School in Chandigarh. She agreed to become a doctor on her parent’s insistence, but never went for the All India Pre-Medical Test and decided to pursue a different career.

Career

Kangana decided to move to Delhi to look for other career option, but her parents weren’t happy with her decision. In Delhi, she got in touch with Elite Modelling Agency, who loved her and suggested modelling assignments. Kangana started pursuing theatre and worked with Arvind Gaur and Girish Karnad. On receiving positive review, she moved to Mumbai to focus on a career in films.

She enrolled for a four-month training program with Asha Chandra, at her drama school. Ranaut had to struggle a lot to make ends meet. She was adamant not to take financial aid from her family and they cut all ties with her after her decision to enter Bollywood.

Her big break came in Anurag Basu’s Gangster. At the age of seventeen, she made a mark in the industry, going on to win all the debutant awards that year. Kangana went on to play challenging roles in Woh Lamhe, and again reunited with Anurag Basu for Life in a… Metro. Kangana went on to star in Fashion, where her small role left a mark.

Her career took a dip, but she was soon back with Tanu Weds Manu, and then Queen, which was a game changer for her. With Queen, she also dabbled with the script since she co-wrote the dialogues with Anvita Dutt Guptan. The film won her the National Film Award for Best Actress. She won the second National Film Award after Tanu Weds Manu Returned.
