Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi is the Chairperson and CEO of PepsiCo. She was born on 28th October, 1955 in Madras, now known as Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India. She is currently ranked among top 100 Most Powerful Women in the World by Forbes. Nooyi was ranked 86th in the Most Powerful Woman’s list by Fortune as well.

Early life and Education

Nooyi had a humble beginning in Madras. She came from a simple, conservative middle-class family. Her father was a bank official. In spite of coming from a conservative background, Nooyi had a wild streak in her. She was known to be rebellious as a young girl and even played the guitar in a band. She was active in sports and was part of the all-girl’s cricket team, something that the society didn’t appreciate then.

Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi did her schooling from Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. She was a brilliant student and showed much promise from an early age. She went on to study physics, chemistry and math from the Madras Christian College. She graduated in 1974. Nooyi subsequently completed her MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, and then went on to Yale School of Management.

Career

Indra Nooyi began her career with Tootal. Soon she moved to Johnson & Johnson where she was the product manager. Having done a great job, she was soon shifted to take charge of Stayfree sanitary napkins, which were being introduced in India. The advertising of feminine hygiene products was banned and Stayfree was struggling to make a mark in the Indian market. Nooyi made a breakthrough when she decided to market directly to college students and children in high schools.

Nooyi realized that she was underprepared for her job and went on to Yale School of Management, where she completed a course in Public and Private Management. She joined Boston Consulting Group and then kept on going up the ranks in different renowned companies.

She joined PepsiCo in 1994 and played a key role in the growth of Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut, that the company was involved in. She has also helped PepsiCo focus on healthier snacks and was promoted to CFO in 2000 and finally became the CEO after Steve Reinemund retired in 2006. She has recently been selected by Donald Trump to the Strategic and Policy Forum.

Her husband Raj Nooyi and her two daughters, stay in Greenwich, Connecticut.
